Roger Ebert Oprah 2010 Appearance Brings Out New Voice. The award winning film critic that lost his voice after a thyroid cancer surgery went awry debuted his new voice on Oprah. Roger Ebert hasn’t spoken for nearly four years. This, of course, abruptly ended his broadcast as a film critic (which was four decades old!) and one half of the show Siskel and Ebert.
His “new” voice is actually an electronic replication of his original voice. Instead of talking, Ebert will type what he wants to say and a computer will sound his voice. He’s really excited that at least the recording sound like him.
The company that is responsible for giving Roger Ebert his voice back is in Edinburg. The company, Cereproc, plans on selling more “voices” in the US, and is excited about having someone like Roger Ebert use their technology.
Ebert found Cereproc on the internet. Ebert is the first time that the technology firm actually rebuilt a voice using recordings. This is an earth shattering breakthrough and may give individuals a chance to speak if something tragic happens and they lose their voice.
Oprah was a great choice for debuting his new voice. Millions of people tune in to her each and every day, and this is her last season.
What do you think about Ebert’s new voice technology? Do you think he will go back in to broadcast and be able to pick up where he left off before the surgery?
